Memories of the memorial....

Upon Pam's insistence on the need to to do something touristy we stopped over at the war memorial for australian soldiers who died during world war 2....

And we were confronted with this monstrosity....a huge flame stuck in the ground...it looked rather incongrous...in the middle of a courtyard....and like it was, like most things australian, too big, too clumsy and an utter waste of resources....that initial thought was further confirmed when i read the inscription behind it which claimed proudly that this flame had been burning for 57 years.....

57 years!!!....on 2nd thought....forget greasy joe's.....you wanna save the world, nuke this gas guzzler instead........thats 57 years of fossil fuels for something that only noisy groups of japanese tourists in too large hats and hidden behind too large cameras take photos with......

oh....and us....

in any case....knowing S11....initial conversation was spontaneously on the topic of what it would be like to extinguish this "eternal flame".....I sat wondering whether i would have my visa cancelled....and then decided that getting deported didnt sound like the best of ideas...at least yet....

my good intentions were, however, short lived....for not 2 minutes later....a big, aussie, guard was booming at us ( well me actually)....from across the courtyard fpr defacing this exquisite monument of australian pride....

and i swear i meant no harm....all i wanted was a picture perched on a ledge along the steps up to the monument....unfortunately Mr. I'm-proud-of-the-heritage-of-my criminal-british-ancestors guard didnt see it in quite the same innocent light as i did....and the only shot i did get was of me scrambling off the ledge before i got shot down by the royal heritage snipers.....

with a lolly in me mouth.....not the most glamorous of photos eh.....
